Grizzly On The Khutze River

Released 2015

The original has sold but this artwork is available as a limited edition giclée reproduction.

The Khutze River Estuary lies at the head of an inlet and is typical of the dozens of fjords that intricately fill the B.C. coastline between Vancouver and the Alaskan border. In September the return of spawning salmon brings an enormous focus of life to these areas as everything from Grizzlies to Mew gulls come to feast on the bounty. The theme in this painting is my attempt to capture the excitement of this 'time of plenty'. It is unfortunately missing the sounds and smells that are an integral part of the scene. Until recent years trophy hunting for grizzlies was carried out in this region and large bears were very cautious to show themselves in daylight. The Raincoast Conservation Foundation was particularly concerned about the impact the trophy hunt was having on the overall grizzly population. In an enormous fund-raising drive they raised several million dollars and have now purchased from the B.C. government two of the guide-outfitter licenses for the mid coast. They are still working to acquire the third which will make most of the coastal inlets much safer for bears. In just a few years many grizzlies have become much less wary and now calmly feed on salmon in the presence of human visitors.

Complimentary shipping is available on all original or giclée artworks and applies to the majority of Canadian and US mainland addresses. A gallery representative will confirm with you if your order is eligible.
