Frequented in summertime by yachts and sailboats, Newcastle Island is a regional park off the coastal city of Nanaimo, B.C. It is a haven for those wishing to experience a relatively undeveloped Gulf of Georgia ecosystem. Sandstone bluffs with dry grasses and arbutus trees surround the perimeter giving way to forests of moss-covered Douglas firs with huge sword ferns in the island’s centre.
