Sunrays In The Forest

Painting lush west coast forests is always a great joy; this one was no exception. The shapes of moss-covered root systems and twisted branches offer endless possibilities. I love the way layers of humidity and light play against one another, providing depth which makes the foreground stand out from the complexities of the distant foliage. The largest cedar has a scar from several hundred years earlier when its bark was stripped by First Nation gatherers and is typical of the giant trees seen near Tofino on Meares Island.
