Sea Otters: Hiding in the Kelp

Released 2005

Any excuse to paint sea otters is a thrill for me after an overly friendly individual tried to crawl into my kayak near Kuyoquot, B.C. They are extremely intelligent and curious making them fascinating to watch in the wild. Without the blubber layer that most marine mammals have to keep warm, sea otters must eat approximately half their body weight each day to survive.

Clams, crabs and sea urchins are all consumed using a rock carried under their armpit to break the hard shells. Their numbers are steadily returning after being hunted to the brink of extinction at the end of the eighteen hundreds.

Complimentary shipping is available on giclée orders and applies to the majority of Canadian and US mainland addresses. A gallery representative will confirm with you if your order is eligible.
