Trumpeter Swans: Winter Solitude
Released 1997
There is a marsh at the end of a short trail from the inlet where my floathouse studio lies moored. This marsh is sometimes the winter home to Trumpeter swans. The pond is so small that the swans have to circle three times to get above the trees when they depart. In the mid-nineties eleven swans spent their winter here. To keep them from being anxious in my presence I constructed a blind that overlooks the pond and spent many hours watching them undetected. In January when the temperature dropped below freezing, the mist rising from the water channels was the source of some fabulous morning light shows. I have painted the scene that I wished I had been able to photograph.
