Common Mergansers: At the Tideline
Mergansers at the Tideline was a painting I had wanted to do for a long time. As with most of my wildlife pieces it was the background that initially inspired the piece. The first thought was to have a great blue heron standing in the foreground, but last winter I was lucky enough to be working from my floathouse studio and have a group of seven common mergansers overwinter in the same bay as the studio. I decided to make them feel right at home and carved decoys from styrofoam crab floats of three mergansers. Each morning I would push out the decoys from the deck of the floathouse and within a week they had served their purpose well, since the group of mergansers began to spend their leisure time on a set of rocks right off the front porch. By another week the mergansers were tame enough that I could sit outside and sketch them. The light bouncing up off the water on the rocks and breasts of the birds was a challenging aspect of this work but it ultimately was tremendously satisfying to work it out.
