Roosevelt Elk: Keeping His Distance

This piece depicts an October morning on the Ursus River in the middle of Clayoquot Sound on Vancouver Island. The bull Roosevelt Elk in the foreground has battled through the night and has been driven off by the larger bull in the distance who retains his position at the head of his harem. The Ursus River is one of the richest wildlife habitats on Vancouver Island. The tracks of deer, elk, wolves, bears and cougar criss-cross the gravel bars. Recent fisheries studies have revealed that record numbers of salmon and steelhead spawn in the river’s numerous back channels.
