Black Brant Geese are a small goose not much larger than a Mallard. They migrate through Vancouver Island en route from Mexico to their Arctic breeding grounds. Thousands stop in April along the beaches on the eastern side of Vancouver Island  to feed on eel grass, fattening up before heading further north. Occasionally smaller flocks travel along the west coast of the Island on their way northward and these have been shown in this scene on Chesterman Beach near Tofino.
