Duck Ranch At Hat Creek

Released 2015

Hat Creek in the fall is a painter’s heaven. Lying roughly half way between Cache Creek and Lillooet in the B.C. interior the golden fall colours are always a treat for a guy who spends most of the year painting the greys and greens of the west coast. The Duck Ranch was owned by a Chinese family up to the 1930s that had settled in the valley after the Cariboo gold rush. They had an extensive market garden and sold produce to the bustling town of Ashcroft. The property is now within the grazing rights of the 88 Brand Ranch. The farm buildings and main house are still standing but last winter the roof of one building caved in and slowly the rest of the homestead will meet the same fate. I have painted these classic log structures on location several times and often wonder about the family and the folks that could build perfectly notched logs with a broad axe.
