Sunset From North Chesterman Beach

The outer west coast of Vancouver Island is a fabulous place to view sunsets. Often in the winter the first glimmer of a break in the weather comes along the horizon over the open ocean at the end of the day. The colours of the clouds, reflections, and waves can change by the minute which makes it very hard to paint on location and even photographs can be tricky to use as references. After much trial and error I have found the best results come from trying to paint the scene from memory as soon as possible after the sun has gone over the horizon. The waves are always much darker than most beginner painters would believe at this time of day.
