View From Black Rock: The Survivor
Released 2017
This artwork is available as a limited edition giclée reproduction.
The title refers to the lone Sitka Spruce tree that has somehow grown to maturity against all odds. I did a preliminary watercolour of this same tree for a close friend who was dying from colon cancer. The title: “Survivor”, gave him considerable hope. The scene is the view from the Black Rock Resort in Ucluelet, B.C. located on the exposed western shores of Vancouver Island. I was excited by the big seas after a storm in March. The layers of sea spray hanging between the rocky outcrops looked like an interesting challenge in painting aerial perspective. I was originally going to paint in layers of grey as it was the day I got the initial inspiration but the warmer tones with low afternoon light seemed much more interesting and gave the scene a more uplifting feeling. I was thrilled that this artwork won the 2018 World Grand Prize in International Artist Magazine’s competition on Lakes, Rivers and Seascapes.
Complimentary shipping is available on all original and giclée reproduction artworks to the majority of Canadian and U.S. mainland addresses. A gallery representative will confirm with you if your order is eligible.
