Hooded Mergansers Among Lily Pads
Hooded Mergansers are generally very shy and are among the smallest ducks in North America. They nest in hollow trees near ponds and are found along both the east and west edges of the continent. On the BC coast they rarely migrate and it is a great delight to have several pairs year round spending time near my studio. They are comfortable on both fresh and salt water catching everything from frogs and insects to small fish. I have painted them on a fresh water marsh where I was intrigued by the way the light was coming through the lily pads.
