Sea Otter: Putting His Feet Up
Sea otters were not seen on the B.C. coast after they were hunted to extinction during the 1800s. In the 1970s there were 89 individuals transplanted from Alaska to the north west coast of Vancouver Island. Since that time there has been a steady increase in numbers to a present population of several thousand along the outer coast of Vancouver Island. One evening in February I spotted this large male close to Tofino. Two gulls were trying to steal his sea urchin from him and he had to fight them off with his fists before quickly gulping down the rest of his meal.
