Mallards Looking South
I am always struck at how the first snowfall marks a transition in the landscape. The beauty of autumn sunshine on the fresh snow with thin ice rimming the edge of last summer's lily pads was as much a motivation for this painting as were the mallards themselves. For waterfowl the first snowfall usually means that it is time to start heading south in search of open water.
