Polar Bear: Edge of Ice
A few years ago I was on a Russian research ship in the high Arctic and saw my first polar bear in the wild. It was an impressive sight. Miles from the nearest land the bear was swimming from ice flow to ice flow completely at home in an endless world of ocean and floating ice. It made me realize more than any documentary or National Geographic article had done just how dependent polar bears are on the existence of pack ice. With the polar regions warming in the last decade, the future for many polar bears is certainly precarious.
