Sword Ferns and Maples
The moist river valleys of the Pacific Northwest are home to North America’s largest maple trees. Broad-leafed maples often develop a lush growth of mosses on their trunks in response to the maple’s calcium rich bark. In return the maples glean nutrient from humus and soil that accumulates in the moss layer on their branches.
