The inspiration for this work came from a morning walk in March of 2017 along a privately accessible beach on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia. The actual scene had ancient apple trees where I have painted the arbutus. The light bouncing up off the gravel beach was what initiated the idea. The smooth red bark of the arbutus trees was a much better choice than the apple trees to illustrate the reflected light. The two boats were invented to add a touch of contrasting colour.
