Herons are a common sight all over the world and a frequent subject in my work. In late summer along the north west Pacific coast the dense growth of Bull Kelp creates enough buoyancy to support the weight of a heron as they search for small fish. The light coming through the transparent kelp fronds was what got me thinking about doing this painting. In August the fog banks are constantly coming and going which adds another interesting element to this scene but took several tries with a sponge to get it looking accurate.
