In the mid-nineties I joined a team of bear biologists for ten days in the Khutzeymateen Valley near the Alaska - B.C border. We were up at first light gathering data on scat, bedding sites, and food items as we tracked the lives of several grizzlies using the valley. A few bears were radio tagged and when suddenly they all moved almost 8 km down the inlet we were confused. The next morning we came across the answer. We had unloaded our boat and entered the wall of lush vegetation along the river bank. A few minutes later we returned to the boat for an item we had forgotten and to our amazement a set of grizzly tracks, the largest the researchers have ever seen, appeared in the shoreline mud on top of our own tracks. With dense undergrowth and the noise of the river obscuring any warning sounds it was decided that our work that day should be redirected to the much safer open estuary. I have always wondered what that huge bear might have looked like. We never saw him but the grizzly in this painting depicts what I imagined him to be. The actual Khutzeymateen river is about three times wider than shown here.

What Is A Giclee?

A Giclée (pronounced Gee-Clay) is a digitally reproduced limited edition print which looks very close to an original painting. All of Mark's giclees are printed on canvas which help to give them that ‘real painting’ feel plus do not require glass when framed.

The original painting is scanned which enables the best quality of reproduction as colours are accurate to the original and can even show the detail of brush strokes. It is a much more colour accurate reproduction than those from traditional 4-colour presses, and the inks are long lasting as well as resistant to light deterioration.

Mark's giclée reproductions are limited to editions of 50, thus making the giclee a good investment if the original is unavailable or out of reach financially. Mark personally numbers and resigns each reproduction.

Giclées generally come in small, medium or large with the specific size varying from one giclee to another. Please see each individual artwork for size options and prices.
