Surf Scoters
ABOUT THE ARTWORK

These odd-looking ducks are the most numerous of all the over-wintering waterfowl in the inlet where my float house studio is located. Flocks of up to 1000 birds arrive in October and feast on the mussels hanging from the neighbouring oyster farm floats. As the mussels are consumed the floats rise in the water where gulls and other birds can access dozens of other life forms that fowl the floatation. In the summer of 2023 I drove to the Arctic Ocean and was thrilled to see dozens of Surf Scoters nesting on the edge of fresh water ponds near Tuktoyuktuk. I would love to have known whether the ones I saw in the Arctic were the same individuals that hang around my studio through the winter. The inspiration for this painting was initially not the Scoters but the intricate patterns created by the rippling water. These patterns have fascinated me for years especially when travelling by kayak and it was a fulfilling exercise to finally concentrate on how these dynamic shapes shift and move to make this painting.
